Happy New Year!!

I hope everyone is having a safe and happy New Year! I’m just sitting infront of the TV with everyone waiting for the ball to drop. It’s been a fun evening so far, I’m starting to slow down for the evening…

Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I ate a ton of food and hung out with the family for a few days. It can’t get much better then that, its definitely nice being off for a few days going into the weekend.

This year we did the unthinkable, went out to the mall on black Friday. Honestly, it wasn’t that bad, we got there around seven so not many of the smaller stores were open yet. Although all the anchor stores were packed. I don’t bother with all those big stores anyways, so like I said it wasn’t that bad. :) RadioShack was a bit insane though, I think they had over ten employees. Almost every one of them was busy helping someone.

Anyways, I put up my little fibre tree today, it’s on my desk sitting beside my monitor.
Christmas will be here before we know it!

History so close to home!

I guess it’s been about a month ago now, I did a little exploring around the Tenleytown metro station. Well, let me start by saying, I went there to check out the park back behind radio towers that you have probably seen while driving down Wisconsin Avenue. I saw the green area on a map, so I just had to check it out. Not knowing anything about it I walked around the outside of the open area and captured a few pictures with my camera phone, I couldn’t help but notice the tall castle like structure inside the barbed fence. I wondered if it was like some old @$$ run-down DC jail or something. I guess I didn’t do enough walking, I almost feel like going back up there just to see if there were any signs to tell me it was Fort Reno. Tonight, I just happened to take a closer look at Google maps and noticed it said Fort Reno. After doing a quick Google search I found out that place has quite a bit of history behind it. It is now maintained by the National Park Service and used for public events. I wish I would have known but they have a series of concerts there throughout the summer.

Server up and running! (Colocation)

My server has been up and running since last Wednesday at http://ColoStore.com. Everything seems to be running fairly smoothly, I just need to get a few more things configured before I start transfering over more content. Right now the only thing running off the server is http://2700.us.

What the hell is wrong with people? (Local News)

Man Sets Woman On Fire In T-Mobile Store

CLINTON, Md. -- Police in Prince George's County, Md., are searching for a man who they said set a woman on fire Monday inside a T-Mobile store in Clinton.

Authorities said the man walked into the store, located in 8900 block of Woodyard Road, at about 10:30 a.m., doused the woman with a bottle of a flammable liquid and set her on fire.

Officials said another man rushed to the woman's aid and extinguished the flames.

Fire officials said the woman was transported to an area hospital with second- and third-degree burns.

Police are searching for Roger Byron Hargrave, 34. Police said he left the scene in a burgundy Dodge minivan with Maryland license plate 217M256.

Last minute panic! (Colocation)

As mentioned in my last post, I needed to finish up a few things before shipping my server. Well, I thought everything was a go up until Thursday evening when I started messing with my backup script. After a couple test passes my server locked up! (Oh $hit!!!) It was about 9:30PM when this happened. Cnosidering I was already tired and had a full day or work the next day I didn’t know what to do. I could have pushed it back ‘another’ week but opted to go ahead and swap-out my workstation hardware for my server case and RAID controller/drives. Needless to say I stayed up until 2:30 in the morning getting all the parts swapped over and installing the OS. Before going to bed, I started downloading updates. I woke up around 6:20AM and finished installing the updates. I headed off to work like normal and came back home during lunch to work on getting the IP addresses setup. (Glade I’m within walking distance of work.) The lack of sleep did start to catch-up with me by the afternoon hours but it was nothing a MountainDew couldn’t fix. hehe

My server has been shipped, so it should arrive on Wednesday. I think I’m going to put it through about a week or so of testing before moving everything back over to it. Hopefully everything goes smoothly. I’m still a bit freaked about sending hardware out that really hasn’t been tested as a production server but it ‘should’ be fine. When I build my workstation way back when, the hardware was chosen for its reliability not performance value, it has a decent Intel board with a P4 3.2Ghz CPU with hyper-threading. For memory I chose a 512 stick of Crucial PC3200, at the time that was above standard.

Finishing up server config! (Colocation)

Everything is looking good for Saturday when my server will be shipped off for colocation, I’m just finishing up some last minute server configuration stuff. I’m working on getting a backup script setup, once I get that done I want to setup my IP addresses before-hand. That way everything is pretty much plug’n play when it arrives at the datacenter, I will have access to KVM over IP but hopefully I wont need it.

Colocation

I’m moving forward with the colocation process for my webserver, I’ve had a rocky week trying to get everything straight. I was going to ship it out over the past weekend but due to time restraints and some server reliability issues I decided to hold off until this upcoming Saturday. I had a power supply fan go bad, which I believe was causing my server to lockup under heavy loads. Good thing for my box of spare parts. :)

I still haven’t decided what I’m going to do about my internet connection. I’ll try giving Verizon another chance, this time I will order service over the phone.
