Sprint OverDrive 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot Firmware Update To Version 2.06.06

Here’s a snip from the release notes, I’ll post an update as to my experience within the next few days.

A new firmware update (version 2.06.06), launching June 9, has significant improvements in store for Overdrive customers. Many of these improvements resolve issues presented by customers. Below is a summary of the improvements.

• Improved device stability, eliminating all known freeze-ups and lock-ups • Wi-Fi enhancements that improve Wi-Fi stability and eliminate Wi-Fi
disconnects and crashes
• Significant improvement in 3G & 4G WAN stability, eliminating most 3G and 4G disconnects
• Some improvement (?10%) in overall battery life and battery life in poor coverage. • Faster boot-up time (?20%, or 10-12 seconds faster)
• Improved response time when changing the WAN Mode setting – time savings of approximately 1 minute and 20 seconds; no reboot required (includes switching from 3G to 4G and vice versa)
• ToolTips added to GPS settings screen to help the users understand the GPS settings
• Faster response time after canceling an operation on the Advanced Settings screen (device reset is no longer required; offline time decreased by ?1.5 minutes)
• For Enterprise customers, customization (enable/disable the micro SD card and the TRU-installTM feature) and DataLink support have been added. The Enterprise tool kit to disable the SD card slot and TRU-Install (automatic driver installation) is now available on Sierra Wireless’ Enterprise IT site at www.sierrawireless.com/enterprise. Apple has me by the Core

Yes, I’m an Apple convert and oh boy do I have allot to catch you up on. A few years back I received a 5th gen iPod as a Christmas gift, which started it all. Once the iPod touch came out, I jumped on that in a heart beat as my 5th gen was giving me the fits. At that point I was still living in a Bill Gates M$ Windows world. With the advent of Vista heading down the pipe at the time I decided to give it a shot on my main system at the which was a under-powered ThinkPad R40 with a 2.2Ghz mobile P4 processor and 1GB RAM. That was short lived and I wanted a new laptop anyway. After being a PC guy practically all my life and the little experience I had with MacOS 8 and 9 during my senior year of High School as I took over sys admin duties for a small Mac lab for our YearBook club. As most would be, I was a bit nervous making that type of jump over to the Mac. As I looked at my computing habits and the applications I used at the time, I had the idea that it was going to be a very easy transition as most of my daily tasks were browser based or I was able to find free or cheap alternatives on MacOS 10 Leopard.

Don’t get me wrong here, Microsoft Windows has it’s place. I’m definitely a multi-platform computing person with systems here at home running different all kinds of different flavors of Windows and Linux. I thrive in this stuff, my couple hundred dollar annual subscription to Microsoft TechNet proves that point. At work we are an all Windows shop on the desktop side, which I what I support. Every OS has it’s place and differences, yes, Apple just suites my general home computing needs very well.

I opted for a high-end refurbished 17″ MacBook Pro, I couldn’t be happier with the switch. I do have VMware Fusion for the occasional Windows app I need to run but I find myself using that less and less. Come on GOOGLE, where’s Picasa for the Mac?!?!?!?

I must say, Apple has a wonderful online community behind them. I would say almost like a cult following if you want to look at it that way. Very nice people who are willing to help and grow the community to make it was it is. This really came to life when I recently got the latest 3G iPhone while I was waiting in line, I’ll make that a posting of it’s own. What an experience!

As of late as mentioned above I got the iPhone 3G which was to upgrade my 1st gen iPhone. I know, I’m a g33k, got to have the latest and greatest. Especially if it’s an Apple product, right?

Don’t be surprised if I post something about the Apple TV, that’s all I’m going to say for now. Can you guess?

Server Hard Reboot

I experienced an outage this afternoon at approximately 5:41PM EST. After examining the logs, I could not find any indications of a software or hardware failure that was logged. At this point, it appears the system went down hard. In which it did, services started coming back up around 5:47PM and everything was a go around 5:50PM.

I shot an email off to to support detailing the situation, here’s what I received.

There was a car accident several blocks away from the datacenter that caused a power surge in the system, it ended up tripping quite a few breakers, the UPS on your power segment did not sync back right away and did a power bounce. I have talked to the techs and more then likely we will be doing some maintenance on that segment and may replace the unit.

At least I can say it wasn’t a total disaster, could have been a lot worse. Definitely struck me by surprise though.

WordPress Problem

I just upgraded my version of WordPress the other day to the latest stable release but the new AJAX dynamic editor seems to be a bit problematic. Those of you keeping up with my blog via RSS readers have probably seen some of my posts show multiple times. Twice I’ve had posts mess up the layout of the site because of wrong code with the editor. I think its the Google toolbar spellchecker I use.

Last minute panic! (Colocation)

As mentioned in my last post, I needed to finish up a few things before shipping my server. Well, I thought everything was a go up until Thursday evening when I started messing with my backup script. After a couple test passes my server locked up! (Oh $hit!!!) It was about 9:30PM when this happened. Cnosidering I was already tired and had a full day or work the next day I didn’t know what to do. I could have pushed it back ‘another’ week but opted to go ahead and swap-out my workstation hardware for my server case and RAID controller/drives. Needless to say I stayed up until 2:30 in the morning getting all the parts swapped over and installing the OS. Before going to bed, I started downloading updates. I woke up around 6:20AM and finished installing the updates. I headed off to work like normal and came back home during lunch to work on getting the IP addresses setup. (Glade I’m within walking distance of work.) The lack of sleep did start to catch-up with me by the afternoon hours but it was nothing a MountainDew couldn’t fix. hehe

My server has been shipped, so it should arrive on Wednesday. I think I’m going to put it through about a week or so of testing before moving everything back over to it. Hopefully everything goes smoothly. I’m still a bit freaked about sending hardware out that really hasn’t been tested as a production server but it ‘should’ be fine. When I build my workstation way back when, the hardware was chosen for its reliability not performance value, it has a decent Intel board with a P4 3.2Ghz CPU with hyper-threading. For memory I chose a 512 stick of Crucial PC3200, at the time that was above standard.

Everything is looking good for Saturday when my server will be shipped off for colocation, I’m just finishing up some last minute server configuration stuff. I’m working on getting a backup script setup, once I get that done I want to setup my IP addresses before-hand. That way everything is pretty much plug’n play when it arrives at the datacenter, I will have access to KVM over IP but hopefully I wont need it.

I’m moving forward with the colocation process for my webserver, I’ve had a rocky week trying to get everything straight. I was going to ship it out over the past weekend but due to time restraints and some server reliability issues I decided to hold off until this upcoming Saturday. I had a power supply fan go bad, which I believe was causing my server to lockup under heavy loads. Good thing for my box of spare parts.

I still haven’t decided what I’m going to do about my internet connection. I’ll try giving Verizon another chance, this time I will order service over the phone.
